About Us

To acknowledge, honor and celebrate the important achievements of Samuel de Champlain, the man who explored and named Lake Champlain, Champlain College has organized its own Champlain Quadricentennial. Our celebration will reach its high point in 2009, the 400th anniversary of the year when our lake was named.

On the Advisory Board for our celebration, Vermont leaders and visitors from other states, honorary Vermonters, join in planning, organizing, hosting and sponsoring a celebration to run for four days in July 2009. Our celebration will also leave a permanent legacy.

This celebration, while the first of its kind for Champlain College, takes its place in the tradition of centennial celebrations of the history of our lake. In 1909, President of the United States William Howard Taft visited Vermont to help mark the tercentenary of Samuel de Champlain’s explorations. Our events will include an exhibition of posters, photographs, announcements and artifacts from that anniversary.

As we approach the year of the Quadricentennial, we will continue to expand and enrich the website with more announcements and illustrations of our plans. Be sure to watch for a blog as our website grows and becomes increasingly interactive in what it offers to our visitors here.

We hope that you will return here and will visit us on our Burlington campus in the summer of 2009.
